Umhlanga Pier

Known locally as the Whalebone Pier, this 80-metre pier doubles as a stormwater outlet, with 16 pairs of arching ribs that grow taller towards the end. It was named first on CNN's 2014 list of the world's most beautiful piers, and the platform at the end gives great views back along the beachfront.
Insider tip: Walk to the end at sunrise or on a clear evening for the best views, and keep an eye out for dolphins beyond the backline.
