The Sardine Run
Ballito & North Coast
Each year in June or July, vast shoals of sardines move up the KwaZulu-Natal coast, followed by dolphins, sharks and seabirds. The action is concentrated on the South Coast, but it makes national news and is worth watching for if you are here in winter. During the run the Sharks Board may lift nets and some beaches restrict bathing, so check the signs before swimming.
