Ballito & North Coast
Humpback whales pass the KwaZulu-Natal coast roughly from May or June to November. They travel north towards Mozambique in winter, with sightings peaking in late July and August, then return south from September, often with calves. You rarely need a special lookout: a headland, the boardwalk, a restaurant terrace or a sea-facing balcony will do. Watch for blows, splashing tails and breaching.
Insider tip: October is a lovely time to look for mothers travelling south with their calves close to shore.
