Sun protection all year
Ballito & North Coast
South Africa has high UV levels, and on the North Coast you can burn even on hazy or winter days. CANSA advises seeking shade between 10am and 4pm, wearing a hat, sunglasses and protective clothing, and using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 20 to 50, or 30 to 50 for fair skin. Reapply every two hours and after swimming.
Insider tip: Plan beach time for the early morning or late afternoon, and give children a rash vest for the water.
