Shark nets and bathing notices

Many KwaZulu-Natal bathing beaches are protected by shark safety gear installed and maintained by the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board. Nets can be lifted after heavy seas or during the winter Sardine Run, and bathing may then be closed or left to swimmers' discretion. Always read the signs at the beach entrance and follow the lifeguards' instructions, especially after storms or when the water is murky.
Insider tip: If the red flag is up or the lifeguards say the beach is closed, enjoy a tidal pool instead.
